Rhubarb is a great thing to grow in your garden. It is relatively easy to grow and will give you years of tasty rhubarb for making puddings, chutney and cordials. The absolute best in my book is the old classic of rhubarb crumble. The sweet and tangy fruit combined with the crunchy crumble is heavenly. You can top it with custard, ice cream or as a real treat with clotted cream.

clotted cream DIY

If you have an Aga, making your own clotted cream couldn’t be easier. All you need to do is pour double cream into a dish and set it at the back of the Aga. The constant gentle heat over a few hours will turn your double cream into thick and delicious clotted cream. I usually put mine out the night before and it is ready by morning. So easy

A good dollop of clotted cream melting over your hot rhubarb crumble is the stuff dreams are made of.

Making rhubarb crumble with children

rhubarb crumble with children

This is such an easy recipe that it is definitely one to get the kids to help with. I remember following grandad down the garden to collect rhubarb, marching back with an arm full of rosey sticks and sitting at the wobbly stool at grandads kitchen table helping to chop up the sticks into chunks. Its a brilliant memory and you can create the same types of memories for your children.

For obvious reasons I like to use special child safe knives if my youngest is helping out. I just eases my internal panic of small fingers versus sharp objects. These are fantastic Kids safety knives

Cut off all the leaves and dispose of them carefully as they are actually very poisonous. Once they are removed the sticks can be washed and the children can happily chop them up whilst you gather the other ingredients.

Do I need to peel Rhubarb?

There is no need to peel rhubarb. This is one of the great things about it and why it is so easy to cook with. Just chop it up and go.

You can add other fruits to rhubarb crumble. I have seen a delicious looking recipe for strawberry and rhubarb crumble that I may have to try when our strawberries are fruiting, but rhubarb on its own is just delicious.

cooking with children
  • Get the children to help measure out the flour and sugar into a mixing bowl.
  • Measure out the butter and let the children cut it up into small pieces using a blunt butter knife.
  • This is where it gets fun. With clean hands rub the butter into the sugar and flour mixture until it resembles bread crumbs. This is definitely a part the children will enjoy.

  • Once you have the right consistency sprinkle the crumbs over the rhubarb and gently pat down. Not too much or the crumbly texture will be gone.

  • Pop the pie dish in the oven at 190C or the baking oven if cooking in an Aga ( roasting oven with a cold shelf in for the 2 oven Aga)
  • Bake for 30-40 mins until the crumble is golden and the fruit is bubbly.
