If your family is like mine, they LOVE pizza. Homemade pizza crust can be a bit time consuming, but then I found this method from another blogger and my life became a whole lot easier. The children want pizza for lunch? No problem! I can whip up a pizza in under 30 minutes.
No more planning ahead to make a dough, knead, proof, etc. This method requires no kneading and can be in the oven in a few minutes.
So the basic idea is that you just put sourdough starter on a baking stone or cast iron frying pan and bake… Thats ok, but with a little tweak it can become an outstanding pizza crust.
Basic tips for making sourdough pizza base
- This type of pizza base uses up your sourdough starter.
- You will need a pizza stone or a cast iron pan to cook on
- If you are cooking in an Aga you can cook directly on the base of the oven. I use a piece of bake o glide to make it easier for lifting in and out of the oven.
- Make sure whatever you are cooking on is pre heated to cook the base through properly.
- Chop up the veggies and prepare any pizza toppings whilst the base is cooking.
How to make Sourdough pizza base
Sourdough pizza base ingredients
- Sourdough starter discard
- Flour
- Water
- Salt
Supplies
Method
- Preheat your pizza stone or cast iron pan. At the same time preheat your oven. If cooking in an Aga you can skip this step and just get out your bake o glide.
- Whilst they are preheating you can prepare the ‘dough’.
- Put 1.5 cups of starter into a bowl then add 1 cup of flour and 1/2 cup water.
- Mix together to for a sticky, thick batter.
- Spread this sticky dough onto your bake o glide or pizza stone etc
- Sprinkle with a pinch of salt.
- Slide into the oven and cook for 10 minutes at 250 degrees Celsius
- Meanwhile prepare the toppings. You will need a sauce, cheese and other toppings. I have added peppers this time, but you can use any pizza toppings that you like and that you have on hand.
- For the sauce I used tomato passata with crushed garlic and mixed dried herbs. Really easy pantry staples.
- Once the base is cooked, remove from the oven and begin adding the toppings
- Since all of the toppings were prepared during the time that the base was in the oven this should go nice and quickly.
- Spread on the tomato base then start adding your toppings followed by the cheese.
- Now you have added all of your favourite toppings you are ready for round 2 in the oven
- Cook in the oven for 10 minutes at 250 degrees Celsius
- After cooking for 10 minutes your pizza is ready! See just as quick as a frozen pizza, but tastes so much better.
Why do I love sourdough?
If you are new to this blog, you might not know that I love sourdough. It is so versatile and always on hand for so many things.
If you have never made sourdough I have a blog post on HOW TO MAKE A SOURDOUGH STARTER FROM SCRATCH
Also I have another blog on HOW TO MAKE SOURDOUGH BREAD FOR BEGINNERS
What does sourdough pizza crust taste like?
Sourdough pizza base tastes just like a regular pizza crust, but has a slightly tangy flavour just like a sourdough bread loaf.
What is even better about this recipe is that you can make up a batch of pizzas and freeze them for future use. So you can have frozen pizza at the ready for those nights when you just don’t have the energy to cook from scratch.
